Changes are coming to Australia’s nicotine import laws. A range of new measures intended to support a smoke-free future are coming, but will these new regulations make it easier to stop smoking, or will they come between smokers and the most effective way to quit?
Below, we look at the impact Australia’s new nicotine regulations will have on the vaping community and how you can adapt to these new regulations.
Beginning 1st October 2021, consumers importing nicotine products to vape for smoking cessation will require a valid medical prescription. Additionally, nicotine E-liquids will require child-proof mechanisms.
The introduction of these vaping restrictions is due to the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s independent regulatory decision to support smoking cessation. The TGA acknowledges that vaping is a pathway for smoking cessation via controlled nicotine uptake, and this decision balances that need with preventing adolescents and young adults from taking up nicotine E-cigarettes.
The new regulations will make it slightly more complicated to access vaping products. However, it’s not impossible! Consumers can still import nicotine E-cigarettes and E-liquids legally through the TGA Personal Importation Scheme. Under the Personal Importation Scheme, you’re allowed to import a 3-month supply of therapeutic goods at a time.
According to TGA, “Any medical practitioner who considers it is appropriate for their patient to use nicotine E-cigarettes for smoking cessation can prescribe nicotine E-cigarettes for personal importation. Medical practitioners do not need TGA approval to prescribe nicotine E-cigarettes for their patient when they access them through the personal importation scheme.”
Basically, if you’re vaping to quit smoking, which is now recognised as a legitimate avenue for kicking the habit, you can talk to a medical practitioner about your concerns. Simply get a valid medical prescription from a doctor, present your prescription to Shosha! And you’re all set.*
Your General Practitioner (GP) can provide a prescription for vaping at their discretion, should they believe that it’s appropriate for your journey away from nicotine and smoking addiction.
Discuss your needs with a doctor and bring up the option of vaping with them, letting them know how it may have helped you up until now, or how you feel it might benefit you on your journey. If they feel it’s appropriate, they will write the prescription for you.
If your GP is not able to provide a prescription, there is a list of doctors that will be able to access you and provide a prescription if it is appropriate. The list is as below:

Nicotine E-liquids are only available on our Shosha Australia website, not at the local Shosha store therefore once you have a prescription, you can then simply send it through to us online, and we can match you with the appropriate concentration. Easy as that!
Additionally, we’ll soon be opening more stores around Australia, allowing customers to access a large range of vaping products and non-nicotine E-liquids. If you need additional information on vaping products you can come in-store and our friendly staff can give you advice and extra knowledge on what you need to make a smooth transition from smoking to vaping.
Using nicotine E-liquid allows smokers to slowly wean off nicotine usage, helping train the body out of the nicotine addiction and away from smoking as a habit.
Countless smokers in Australia have made the switch to vaping due to its many benefits. In fact, vaping is considered to be 95% less harmful than smoking. Smokers-turned-vapers have discussed their improved health, rejuvenated sense of smell, and overall feeling better while remaining social and controlling their nicotine intake.
A University of Auckland study also found that vaping was an effective alternative to smoking, and that nicotine-based E-liquid was more effective at preventing study subjects from reverting to tobacco use.

Vaping is significantly cheaper than smoking. Cigarette prices in Australia are increasing. In fact, of the Commonwealth Countries in the world, Australia’s cigarette prices are easily the highest.
We recently conducted an independent study that shows Australians consider smoking to be the second-most unattractive thing a partner can do, right after having a criminal record!
Nicotine Salt E-liquids (or Nic Salts for short) are a type of E-liquid most effective for quitting smoking, offering a simple way to reduce your nicotine intake as you go rather than attempting to go cold turkey. If you’re looking into nicotine E-liquids options, Shosha can help.
If this is your current method, or if it’s something you’d like to try, below are some of our top recommended Nic Salts E-liquid ranges. You’ll find a lot of Salty World in that collection, but don’t be surprised! Salty World is Australia’s most popular E-liquid series, and for good reason. Try it, experiment with it, love it, and see for yourself why it’s our top choice!
If there’s any way for us to help you adapt to these new regulations, give us a call! We’re more than happy to answer any questions you may have and help in any way we can.
*When the new regulation comes into force, we will have a system available on our Shosha Australia website where you are able to submit or upload your prescription through to us.
